Wapping Hydraulic Power Station

Posted on: February 6th, 2025 by sdEditor

Bold Tendencies – a not-for-profit arts organisation supporting community engagement through transformative cultural spaces appointed Steeldeck Rentals to deliver a bespoke seating installation for BODYSUIT, a multidisciplinary dance project.

The Project:
Bold Tendencies is celebrated for revitalising underused spaces. The organisation has brought its visionary approach to the Wapping Hydraulic Power Station, a Grade II* listed building on the Thames, which is used for immersive exhibitions and groundbreaking performances.

The performance of BODYSUIT combines movement, light, sound, and environment into a liberating artistic experience. Performed on a mirrored dance floor, the show required a seating design that balanced technical precision with aesthetic ambition. Our detailed seating plan highlighted restricted-view seating areas, ensuring transparency and an optimal audience experience within the unique venue.

The Challenge:
The Wapping Hydraulic Power Station’s industrial architecture presented a significant challenge during the design and installation. The seating bank had to be custom-built to navigate the space’s prominent structural columns while optimising sightlines and maintaining audience comfort and access. This required several iterations of the design to achieve the perfect balance between functionality, safety, and visual harmony.

The Kiln

Steeldeck Rentals enjoys a long-standing relationship with London’s Kiln Theatre, an intimate venue known for its big ambitions. Regular users of our dry hire services, the theatre often incorporates our decking into their productions.

For The Purists, Deputy Production Manager Charlotte Ranson approached Steeldeck Rentals to help realise the unique set design—a split-level, skeletal representation of a New York residential building. With its industrial aesthetic featuring exposed structural frameworks and scaffolding, Steeldeck was the natural choice. We provided a robust raised platform for the upper level, seamlessly complementing the urban design of the show.

Sustainability was central to the production, with The Kiln committed to the Theatre Green Book, the initiative which champions the theatre industry to work more sustainably. By using reusable materials from Steeldeck, the theatre avoided single-use construction and minimised waste, furthering their environmental goals.

The Challenge

Our Solution
We examined a scaled model of the set to visualise the Steeldeck structure in situ, identify potential issues, and plan accordingly. We drafted initial deck layouts and collaborated closely with the designer and production draftsman. The complexity of the design led us to create a detailed 3D model of the structure, ensuring we could accurately assess the underside and plan for compliant bracing that met the vision.

Key aspects of the solution included:

Swan Lake Photoshoot

Posted on: October 8th, 2024 by sdEditor

New Adventures, the British dance company led by the visionary Matthew Bourne, is renowned for its distinctive approach to theatrical storytelling. This year marks the 30th anniversary of their groundbreaking reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. To commemorate this milestone, the company recreated an iconic scene in the heart of London, staging a breathtaking photoshoot on the lake in St James’s Park.

Having previously worked with Production Manager Dylan Batdorff on theatre and events productions, Dylan got in touch to task Steeldeck with the challenge of designing and installing a submerged platform to stage the photoshoot as part of a media event for the launch of the Swan Lake production.

The immediate challenge was clear: how could we build a stable, level platform in the middle of St James’s Park Lake? Initially, we had no information about the depth of the lake or the condition of its base. If the lake was too deep, we would need extra bracing for stability. Soft or rocky ground could complicate the distribution of weight across the structure’s legs. Assembling the platform without interrupting accessibly to the public, especially with the location adjacent to the popular Blue Bridge tourist attraction, added another layer of complexity.

Our first step was a site survey and planning visit with the client and the Royal Parks’ events and filming manager. We assessed access points, health and safety risks, and the environment, and learnt that the lake is man-made with a maximum depth of 3 feet with a solid concrete base. We also coordinated with the park’s environmental team to ensure minimal disruption to the wildlife.

Our Steeldeck crew, equipped with waders and life jackets, conducted a full survey and measured a 20m x 20m section, recording depths every 6 feet. These measurements were transferred into AutoCAD, allowing us to precisely design the platform and calculate the required leg lengths for each section of the lake.

Paraorchestra

Posted on: August 20th, 2024 by sdEditor

Bristol-based Paraorchestra is the only orchestra in the UK that unites professional disabled and non-disabled musicians to create large-scale, innovative music projects. Their upcoming August concert, part of the BBC Proms, will transform the traditional classical experience with The Virtuous Circle, an immersive performance that includes Mozart’s 40th Symphony, contemporary compositions, and dance.

When Production Manager Hannah Chittel sought a complete set made from Steeldeck and needed assistance with the design process, she was recommended to us. We collaborated to deliver a flexible arrangement of platforms and ramps, enabling the cast to rehearse and experiment with the performance piece. The set design needed to be highly adaptable to accommodate the needs of both performers and the audience.

With initial dimensions in hand, we drafted several design options featuring practical low-level ramps and platforms. For the R&D week at the Document rehearsal space, we delivered a set design that included rolling platforms capable of locking into place alongside neighbouring ramps and platforms. Paraorchestra experimented with various configurations, ultimately settling on a central circular arrangement with 12-meter ramps extending to either side of the auditorium.

Thanks to the versatility of the Steeldeck system and our expertise, we were able to create a robust, industrial look that was also fully accessible for performers and audiences.

Our involvement in the design process throughout the R&D meant we could showcase the modular benefits of Steeldeck, especially for creating varied performance and audience viewing levels in a promenade setting. This level of project management and client support for redesigns is a hallmark of Steeldeck’s customer service.

Our dependable, hassle-free product and support—from design to installation and de-rigging—ensured the success of this unique project. Are you in need of stage or seating hire in Bristol? Take a look at our Bristol and Cardiff Stage Hire projects today.

42 Balloons

Posted on: August 12th, 2024 by sdEditor

“42 Balloons” is the brilliantly funny musical performance that tells the true story of Larry Walters and Carol Van Deusen’s extraordinary adventure to achieve a lifelong dream. In the summer of 1982, they constructed an unconventional aircraft using a chair and approximately 42 helium balloons, launching Larry 16,000 feet into the sky above Los Angeles.

Having previously collaborated with Steeldeck on other projects, Production Manager Ryan Funnell reached out to us for assistance in constructing a raised band platform behind the set. The show features a live band, and the stage space in the Quays Theatre at The Lowry required additional space with a raised platform.

The platform needed to be at a specific height to align perfectly with the level of the scenery, requiring full bracing due to its height. Additionally, the design had to tightly follow the curve of the scenery.

We explored various deck layout options in AutoCAD and considered different solutions for the access steps to minimise the use of wing space.

With a tight build and tech schedule for the show, we had to navigate around a lot of other on-stage activities to get the platform built in time for the band to begin technical rehearsals.

Despite other work needing completion before we could start our platform, we kept our team on site and worked around the show’s needs to ensure timely completion.

Nottingham Playhouse

Posted on: August 8th, 2024 by sdEditor

The Nottingham Playhouse has been producing theatre for over 70 years, designing productions that are ‘bold brilliant and relevant, creating lasting memories’, staging ten news shows every year.

In preparation for their latest production, ‘Punch’ by James Graham, the production team required a rehearsal set from day one of rehearsals, and it made sense for Nottingham Playhouse to enlist our experienced staging Steeldeck Rentals London based team to help build and install the set.

Given the unique intricacies of the brief and the complicated design, Steeldeck were tasked to build an 8’ high platform with a walkway underneath, and two sets of curved, ramped steps off the sides, using rectangular deck.

With a meticulous approach to ensure the structure would work, we utilised CAD to conceptualise the structure, engineered a cardboard model, and conducted a test build in our London warehouse. This rigorous testing meant that the final install at the American International Church in Tottenham Court Road would seamlessly match our client’s original vision. The end result met the brief, and we were able to closely recreate the design using Steeldeck, which, as a hireable item that can be set up within half a day, enhanced their rehearsal experience. Nottingham Playhouse were impressed with our work, particularly as feasibility and craftmanship delivered on their objective.

As rehearsals transition to a new location in Nottingham, we will continue to support the production in replicating the build. We really enjoyed working on this project, as it demonstrates our expertise in tackling complex designs in stage construction. Explore our Theatre & Music Stage Hire solutions today.

The Macallan and Cirque du Soleil

Posted on: July 5th, 2024 by sdEditor

To celebrate its 200th anniversary in unforgettable style, Scottish distillery The Macallan commissioned Cirque du Soleil – world renowned for their contemporary and ingenious circus performances – to create an immersive and bespoke show in one of the warehouses on The Macallan’s award-winning estate.

Steeldeck Rentals collaborated closely with the design team to meet their unique requirements, such as incorporating a river running through the stage and designing retractable bridges. The project required the installation of 500 pieces of Steeldeck to create this epic performance space. The deck was carefully aligned to match the ground levels outside, creating a seamless flow from the audience area to the performance stage.

In collaboration with the technical director and designers, we developed innovative solutions such as constructing the riverbed base, which included a tank holding 700 litres of water to maintain a flowing river system. We designed a retractable bridge system with three bridges spanning the river, designed to operate invisibly during the performance.

We were in constant communication with the client, managing the scheduling and providing ongoing engineering and technical support right up to the show’s opening night. Our team collaborated with multiple departments to address specific needs such as reinforcing the area for the tightwire performance. We meticulously aligned the entire structure along a 60-metre centre line, starting from three points in the room, ensuring precise installation.

This project presented unique challenges to keep us on our toes including its stunning remote location, complex load in process and the grand scale of the production.

The performances received high praise from both The Macallan distillery and the audience, marking what can happen when creativity and expertise come together for a memorable celebration of The Macallan’s 200th anniversary. Explore our other Stage Hire Solutions for Scotland today.

The vision of the artistic team is to create innovative productions delivered by globally renowned artists for both stage and screen. Their goal is to infuse new and unexpected experiences from timeless stories to captivate audiences worldwide.

Their 8-week production Ulster American, directed by Jeremy Herrin at Studio 2 of the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, London starred Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis and Louisa Harland.

Having prior experience with Steeldeck’s seating and staging rental service through collaboration with Lloyd Thomas Production Management, Ulster American’s Production Manager Juli Fraire reached out for our help. The team needed to create a design for a bespoke seating bank that would maximise the overall capacity of the venue, without compromising on safety or the size of the performance space for the production itself. Steeldeck’s services matched this brief expertly given our custom design approach and the strict parameters that we can operate within.

Due to the modular nature of Steeldeck’s staging and seating, we were able to offer a more bespoke service within budget. We listened to our clients’ requirements to achieve the maximum seating capacity of 442 seats, mindful that the venue’s total capacity is for 450 people. We adjusted the rake of the bank and created a smart seating option that best utilised the space without compromising on audience sightlines. This meant we could align with Second Half Productions vision to invigorate audiences.

We were thrilled to support the Ulster American production.
