The Macallan and Cirque du Soleil

Posted on: July 5th, 2024 by sdEditor

To celebrate its 200th anniversary in unforgettable style, Scottish distillery The Macallan commissioned Cirque du Soleil – world renowned for their contemporary and ingenious circus performances – to create an immersive and bespoke show in one of the warehouses on The Macallan’s award-winning estate.

Steeldeck Rentals collaborated closely with the design team to meet their unique requirements, such as incorporating a river running through the stage and designing retractable bridges. The project required the installation of 500 pieces of Steeldeck to create this epic performance space. The deck was carefully aligned to match the ground levels outside, creating a seamless flow from the audience area to the performance stage.

In collaboration with the technical director and designers, we developed innovative solutions such as constructing the riverbed base, which included a tank holding 700 litres of water to maintain a flowing river system. We designed a retractable bridge system with three bridges spanning the river, designed to operate invisibly during the performance.

We were in constant communication with the client, managing the scheduling and providing ongoing engineering and technical support right up to the show’s opening night. Our team collaborated with multiple departments to address specific needs such as reinforcing the area for the tightwire performance. We meticulously aligned the entire structure along a 60-metre centre line, starting from three points in the room, ensuring precise installation.

This project presented unique challenges to keep us on our toes including its stunning remote location, complex load in process and the grand scale of the production.

The performances received high praise from both The Macallan distillery and the audience, marking what can happen when creativity and expertise come together for a memorable celebration of The Macallan’s 200th anniversary.

Ubisoft for Blast R6 Major Manchester Final

The Bowlers Exhibition Centre (B.E.C.) in Manchester, a venue known for diverse exhibitions, conferences, sporting events and live music, was chosen for the Rainbow Six BLAST R6 Major Manchester 2024. This tournament brings together 20 elite teams from across the globe to compete for a $750,000 prize pool. Given Steeldeck Rentals’ extensive experience in event staging and seating structures in Manchester and London, we were the ideal delivery partner for this project.

To transform the exhibition centre into an arena-like environment suitable for a high-energy eSports event, we included tiered and flat floor seating, along with a cost-effective solution for the main stage structure and front-of-house platforms.

As one of the few suppliers capable of customising event structures, we were able to deliver bespoke solutions to meet requirements for both seating and staging.

The initial brief required seating for 1,790 attendees, so we designed a layout and tiered structure to meet this capacity. After the event sold out, there was a demand to increase seating capacity. We revisited the design and changed the layout to accommodate 2,360 attendees without compromising on comfort or safety.

Ulster American at Riverside Studios

Founded in 2020, Second Half Productions is an entertainment company that inspires daring and optimism by showcasing incredible theatre performances. The vision of the artistic team is to create innovative productions delivered by globally renowned artists for both stage and screen. Their goal is to infuse new and unexpected experiences from timeless stories to captivate audiences worldwide.

Their 8-week production Ulster American, directed by Jeremy Herrin at Studio 2 of the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, London starred Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis and Louisa Harland.

Having prior experience with Steeldeck’s seating and staging rental service through collaboration with Lloyd Thomas Production Management, Ulster American’s Production Manager Juli Fraire reached out for our help. The team needed to create a design for a bespoke seating bank that would maximise the overall capacity of the venue, without compromising on safety or the size of the performance space for the production itself. Steeldeck’s services matched this brief expertly given our custom design approach and the strict parameters that we can operate within.

Due to the modular nature of Steeldeck’s staging and seating, we were able to offer a more bespoke service within budget. We listened to our clients’ requirements to achieve the maximum seating capacity of 442 seats, mindful that the venue’s total capacity is for 450 people. We adjusted the rake of the bank and created a smart seating option that best utilised the space without compromising on audience sightlines. This meant we could align with Second Half Productions vision to invigorate audiences.

We were thrilled to support the Ulster American production.

Rematch are an immersive sports experience company who host large scale events based on famous and historic sporting events across the world. From mid-September to early December, they brought the legendary Rumble in the Jungle boxing match to Surrey Quays.

Looking for seating hire to accessorise and dress their space accordingly to recreate the 1974 iconic event; Rematch appointed Steeldeck to deliver five bespoke horseshoe tiered seating structures. Our experience and modular hire kit was the perfect result for Rematch, as we provide custom built seating hire to suit any design, ideal for sporting events such as these. In addition, we were able to meet extra requirements of dry hire on the day of the build.

The bespoke seating structure worked brilliantly for Rematch and our crew collaborated with them to ensure we delivered on their exact specifications. Steeldeck’s expertise in design and build for seating hire successfully brought their vision to life, giving audiences an incredible experience. We are delighted to have fulfilled their requirements, to seamlessly integrate seating hire into a space fit for boxing legends.

INCA Productions are a strategic creative agency who connect brands and audiences through live digital experiences. With offices in London and New York, their clients include Netflix, Meta, Moet and Chandon, Apple and Sky.

We have worked with INCA on several projects including The Fashion Awards 2022 at the Royal Albert Hall and delivering seating in The Tanks at Tate Modern for Meta.

INCA were searching for tiered and flat floor seating arrangements for the primary plenary launch event of EA Sports FC 24 – a video game that was unveiled in July 2023 – and set to be released towards the ends of the year. To align with their design brief, and to create an atmosphere that resembled a football stadium, INCA opted for our plastic seating options to design a room that emulated the shape of a stadium to provide guests with the ultimate experience.

White Claw at BST

Creation Group are a full-service production company who specialise in brand activations, catering to a range of prominent clients including White Claw, Bacardi, ASOS and Red Bull. Their wealth of experience in elevating brand identities is proven by their delivery of compelling and contemporary designs for their clients.

For a number of years, we have collaborated closely with Creation, participating in various large-scale festivals and brand activation initiatives, consistently prioritising design-led innovation.

The team behind White Claw, the ‘Hard Seltzer’ sparkling beverage wanted an innovative display at this year’s British Summer Time (BST) festival in Hyde Park. The design for White Claw comprised two double-stacked shipping containers, complete with an open-air balcony on the upper floor. Creation approached Steeldeck to deliver the foundations and create a stable level platform for the activation.

Creation needed a highly robust flooring solution capable of withstanding the structural loads they were dealing with, and Steeldeck has the flexibility to deliver reinforced materials to accommodate hard wearing support in specialised scenarios like these.

Having originally supplied our kit to Creation in 2021 across three different sites, we were well-equipped for this year’s activation. This year the project presented several challenging aspects as the site at Hyde Park had a strict maximum load limit in place. The structure needed to possess the strength to support the White Claw installation loads, safe for the audience to walk on it, and designed to accommodate uneven ground within the parameters of the limitations of the venue.

We collaborated brilliantly with Creation’s design team and their engineers to find innovative solutions that allowed us to meet these restrictions without compromising the overall design. The final install was a fantastic success, and we were delighted to be a part of the delivery and design.

Royal Docks Rainbows

Working for creative studio Bompas & Parr is always exciting and our most recent temporary stage hire for the team was no exception. This time, we created temporary staging for their Royal Docks Rainbows installation in London. Yes, the event featured actual rainbows!

Our brief was to design a stage and access for the event, which was to staged under the Silvertown overpass, a space which was tricky to say the least, due to the multiple columns in the space and very uneven ground. Luckily, we’re used to complex staging hires, and built our own access routes to get our Steeldeck staging and other kit into the build area. We then erected a large stage for the event itself, complete with front of house and backstage areas and two separate ramps for access – one of which was almost 30 metres long.

The result was an incredible sensory experience that immersed you in the history of the Royal Docks and the borough of Newham in east London.

Roundhouse

Posted on: June 13th, 2023 by sdAdmin

Occupying a former Victorian turning shed for the London and Birmingham Railway Company in Camden, the Roundhouse is one of the most famous and celebrated performing arts venues in London. The venue hosts a huge variety of arts, theatre and music events throughout the year, and is thought by many (including us!) to be the best-looking venue in the capital.

Our relationship with the Roundhouse goes back around 20 years, so we were delighted when they approached us to design and build them a new demountable seating system. The existing system had reached the end of its life and, while waiting for a new custom system to be built, they needed a solution for two large-scale events in 2022, the venue’s own In The Round festival and Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fashion Freak Show.

One of the main challenges with the Roundhouse is, as the name suggests, its shape: we had to build around the original Victorian columns, which needed very careful planning and skilled carpentry, because the 14 columns aren’t equally spaced. Not only that, but the solution was needed in weeks, rather than months.
The brief was to follow the shape of the room to make it look as organic as possible, as if the structures were always there. To achieve this, we used our standard decks with custom-made in-fills.

While these was arguably a couple of the trickiest builds we’ve ever undertaken, we were nevertheless able to complete on time, and within budget. The Roundhouse team were delighted with the results.

We look forward to being asked round again very soon.

Red Bull Dance Your Style

Posted on: June 13th, 2023 by sdAdmin

Red Bull Dance Your Style is a global break dance competition played out in front of live audiences. For this year’s London heat, held right on the river in Battersea, Red Bull briefed us to design and build a circular stage surrounded by tiered risers for a standing audience.

Though the ground was reasonably flat, we needed a detailed site survey to give us enough information to develop a range of designs, and with support from a range of stakeholders we were able to deliver on time with three trucks worth of kit.

Red Bull required the ‘Dance Your Style’ graphic on the surface of the circular stage, so we skinned it in 12mm MDF; which helped to create a nice smooth finish for the vinyl, and it was perfect for the competitors to perform on.

Restoke

Posted on: June 13th, 2023 by sdAdmin

In October 2022, our Manchester branch was contacted by Restoke, an arts organisation in Stoke-on-Trent, about staging for their upcoming production “The Lotus Eaters” – Episode One of “The Odyssey”, a nationwide Public Acts production led by the National Theatre (NT).

Restoke are based in the historic Old Town Hall Fenton in Stoke-On-Trent. The stunning vaulted ceiling of the upstairs ballroom which has been hidden from view for the past 50 years and has now been revealed and restored to its former glory. Restoke were keen to stage the production in-the-round with the audience standing on raised platforms around the outside of the ballroom. Local scaffolding companies weren’t able to help, so they asked their partners at the National Theatre (NT) for advice.

NT Production and Technical Director Paul Handley knew that Steeldeck would be the right company to provide a solution.

Our Project Manager Mike Ager looked at some initial ideas and costs, and then followed up with a site visit. We looked at the options available for deck heights that worked for the production, whilst reducing the amount of labour and equipment to keep the cost of the project within budget. A central section of the platform was raised with an opening underneath to give clear access to a fire exit, as well as elevating chorus members above the audience. Over the months leading up to the production, we updated our original design with additional platforms as acting areas, as well as a simple shelf at ground level which could be used as ‘perch’ seating for extra audience.

Hundreds of community members and professional artists will have participated in the five-part production at venues across the country, ending with Episode 5 “The Underworld” in the Olivier Theatre London in August 2023.

Our final design made excellent use of the historic space and allowed for an innovative staging of the production, and Restoke were delighted with the result as were we.
