Coventry will take on the mantle of UK City of Culture 2021 next year. It’s the third city to be awarded the title by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, after Derry-Londonderry in 2013 and Hull in 2017.

The winner hosts a year-long programme of cultural events and celebrations, giving a major boost to the local economy, tourism, civic pride and increasing access to the arts.

The positive social impact of the arts on populations and individuals is clear, and the City of Culture title is also a catalyst for regeneration and investment. While we await the full impact report from Hull UK City of Culture 2017, it is evident that the legacy of these year-long festivals continues well after the year is up.

One such success story is Back to Ours, which was established as part of the City of Culture project to programme national and international quality touring work in neighbourhoods across Hull. The value in its mission – to engage with the people of Hull and to bring exciting new works and cultural experiences to communities that don’t ordinarily have access to them – as well as the quality of their events, has ensured that Back to Ours continued in its own right after 2017 as a Creative People and Places Project funded by Arts Council England.

Describing the organisation, Louise Yates, Director of Back to Ours, said:

“Here at Back to Ours we’re all about trying to remove barriers to experiencing and enjoying the arts, bringing amazing experiences right to people’s doorsteps. We’ve got another three years of funding from the Arts Council to carry on doing what we love, so expect more surprises, sparkle and shows across Hull and beyond; you never quite know where Back to Ours is going to pop up…”

In October we installed a seating structure for the programme’s Casus Circus Production of DNA at Sirius West Academy, one of many events in a dazzling line-up of art, theatre, music and dance experiences the company organised in 2019. Find out more about the brilliant work they do here:

As Coventry prepares for its time in the spotlight as UK City of Culture 2021, we can’t wait to see what they have planned. We hope to see organisations like Back to Ours emerge once the year is underway – organisations that will make lasting changes across communities and increase the number and diversity of people inspired by and participating in the arts.
