Festival season ramps up

This summer we were busy planning for the UK music festival season, preparing designs for events taking place up and down the country ready to build staging and structures. From conversations with our clients and industry insiders, there was a real spirit of forging ahead this year particularly given cancellations over the last few years.

The almighty Glastonbury Festival spread over 900 acres at Pilton in Somerset took place for another brilliant year for five days between 21st and 25th June. We are fortunate to have worked at Glastonbury over the years and were excited once again be part of such an incredible event. This year we supplied over 1,200 pieces of Steeldeck equipment, both on a hire only and build basis to some of the Festival’s most beloved areas such as The Park, Block 9 and Arcadia.

In Heaton Park at Parklife in Manchester, and Bluedot situated in the stunning grounds at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, we built stages and supplied the production risers.

Towards the end of June and beginning of July, we were installing at Hyde Park for BST (British Summer Time) where an eclectic mix of icons took to the stage over three weekends. Over the years we have built various decks, stages and thrusts for Elton John, Robbie Williams and Green Day to name a few.

We were thrilled to be part of the team for the third year running to deliver most of the stages and supply all the production risers for Kendal Calling. The festival supports emerging artists and is in the most picturesque setting in the Lake District.

Our niche expertise in bespoke event installations means we are regularly appointed to carry out work on brand activations for festivals. We have provided some unique structures for the increasingly successful White Claw, and last year the creative production agency Blonstein tasked us to install a level platform for their Swarovski outlet at the dynamic Wilderness Festival in Oxford. Kicking off ‘the UK’s best pop festival’ this June at Mighty Hoopla in Brockwell Park, Absolut needed a level stage for their brand activation. We built a stable surface to incorporate a 10m wide x 5m deep x 5m tall rainbow structure which became the backdrop for a runway to celebrate the festival and Brighton Pride.

In August we delivered and built stages for the creative Boomtown ‘The Twin Trail’ Festival and for the BBC Sounds stage at Boardmasters in Cornwall. We set up for All Points East in Victoria Park and we will be installing stages for another year running in the secluded woodland in Lincoln, home to Lost Village Festival.

We really enjoy working on projects from the very beginning when creativity is at its peak. Working for the producers of Gottwood Festival, we were involved in designing some of the stages set in pretty woodlands, on The Isle of Anglesey in Wales. We have since worked for team behind Gottwood and had great fun building the main stage and barn stage at the 48-hour Houghton Festival.

On behalf of Judgeday Festivals; in 2019 we built 14 stages of varying sizes including a ramp, enabling wheelchair access to much of the stunning grounds in and around Boughton House for the Greenbelt Festival of arts, faith and justice. The brilliant team at Judgeday employed us to provide all their staging for WOMAD which involved building nine site-wide stages, from 8 to 40 feet, including the renowned BBC Radio 3 Charlie Gillett Stage. Judgeday also had us build five stages in stunning Great Tew Park in the Cotswolds for Cornbury Festival.
