A super quick site visit combined with some rough creative drawings saw Steeldeck contracted to supply and fit tiered structures to the Nuffield Theatre. Working alongside local crew, our brief was to transform the space to an ‘in the round’ experience. Though simple for the tiered structures onstage, we were also required to provide the same size and rake of structures out over the top of the inhouse seats, within the auditoria. With a careful initial survey and innovative usage of our stock components, we had temporary seats floating over the top of in house seats. A sight to behold!
Londoners have been traveling to Brighton for beach getaways ever since the railway arrived here in 1841. The pebbled beach, Brighton Pier’s amusement arcade and the Royal Pavilion are the city’s key sights whilst also offering raves on the beach, Graham Greene novels, mods and rockers in bank-holiday jaunts and the UK’s biggest gay scene. With its bohemian, hedonistic vibe, Brighton is one of England’s most exciting seaside destinations and Steeldeck are delighted to have been a part of this. From creating a bespoke seating rake within an elliptical shaped inflatable top hat at The Brighton Fringe Festival, to converting the grade II listed Attenborough Centre into an in-the-round visitor experience, we are always thrilled to see what this eclectic city has in-store for us.

This was our third outing to the annual Brighton Fringe Festival working for Otherplace Brighton, one of the city’s leading venue management and production companies. Labelled the ‘festival within a festival’, with 4 theatres, 2 bars, a market town and a kids area, ‘The Warren’ was the location for our build. Here we installed a tiered stage with around 280 tip-up seats for a month of comedy, theatre, cabaret, music and family shows. Now that sounds like a recipe for some fun!
"There is a level of complexity with this particular project and Steeldeck have the ability and flexibility to design the custom tiered seating and fitted stage that we need."
Joshua Carr, Technical Director at Otherplace Productions Ltd
It is always a joy to work within the beautiful surroundings of Rodean, a superb independent school in Brighton. Regular projects include supplying and building 700 upholstered tip-up chairs into both a two tiered structure and a flat floor installation, as well as creating a stage and choir riser for their ever impressive speech day.
This job tasked us with creating two simple agoras for “in the round” presentations and discussions. This was very much a “structure only” job in order that our client could clad the rails themselves. A fine example of our ability to also work to simple briefs and budgets.
Working within the iconic Attenborough Centre, a recently refurbished grade II listed building, Steeldeck were contracted by Brighton Dome to convert the space into something truly magical. After many site visits and numerous revisions, we were thrilled to be given permission to totally transform the main space, creating a wholly unique, in-the-round visitor experience.
