The international arts and music festival WOMAD saw Steeldeck once again working alongside the brilliant team at Judgeday Festivals to provide all staging requirements. 2017’s brief involved building 9 site-wide stages, from 8 to 40 foot, including the renowned BBC Radio 3 Charlie Gillett Stage. We very much look forward to our continuing work with Judgeday.
Straddling the River Avon in the southwest of England with it’s prosperous maritime history, Bristol’s former city-centre port is now a cultural hub. The harbour’s 19th-century warehouses today contain restaurants, shops and cultural institutions such as contemporary art gallery, The Arnolfini. With its own unmistakable identity grounded in roots from centuries past, it is now a hotbed of artists and activists. From setting up major areas at Glastonbury Festival to providing a bespoke stage for Arcadia’s legendary Spider in Queen Square, we are always honoured to work with the genius minds who make up Bristol’s creative population.

We were honoured to provide a bespoke stage for Arcadia’s legendary Spider in Queen Square, within their hometown of Bristol. Our brief was to provide a level platform for party-goers, enabling full immersion within the Spider experience whilst covering the technical gadgetry that holds the piece together. We can’t lie, we love Arcadia and are ever delighted to work with the genius that is this great collective.
This was a very last minute job requiring a great many creative solutions. Working on a feature film set within a festival site, a ramp and platform were needed, allowing a steady-cam operator to make a tracking shot of a quad bike. Due to the last minute timings we were unable to survey the site prior to build and thus had to get creative, relying on sketches from the client and Google Earth. Our next challenge came when we realised we weren’t able to fit our 7.5 tonne truck onsite due to large amounts of British summer rain. Again, using our creative logic and careful liaison with the film crew and festival site, we were able to commission a 4 X 4 trailer with the capacity to carry all equipment to site. We were delighted to hear the client was impressed with our ingenuity and problem solving thus allowing the required tracking shot to be achieved.
Having worked for Glastonbury Festival for over 6 years now, we are always excited to receive our next brief. Each year we supply the 5 day festival with over 1000 pieces of Steeldeck equipment, both on a hire only and build basis. 2017’s major projects included building Block 9, Silver Hayes, The Park’s NYC Downlow Stage and Bar and Funkingham Palace in The Rabbit Hole. We are already looking forward to seeing what 2019 will bring.
